GEAR UP To College and Beyond

“Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a competitive grant program from the U.S. Department of Education which increases the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education by providing states and local community education partnerships six to seven year grants to offer support services to high poverty, middle and high schools.

The GEAR UP TCB initiative aims to increase the academic performance and postsecondary preparation levels for all learners- while simultaneously boosting educational expectations and understanding for entire families. The grant is also strategically collaborating with selected business and community partners to ensure that all cohort students are receiving the most effective support possible on their journeys to future college and career success.

Years of grant: 2017-2024

Homework Help:

All 8th grade scholars have been given access to use the tutoring resource Homework Help. Through Homework Help 8th grade scholars can receive online tutoring for all core content subjects, as well as Spanish. The online tutoring is available 24/7. Scholars have already been given their logins and have access to HH immediately.

Community Service:

Community service is volunteer work which is done for free in order to give back to the community. Community Service can help any group of people in need. You do not get paid to perform community service, although sometimes food or small gifts are given to volunteers as a token of appreciation. Sometimes students are required to complete community service as a part of a class requirement or as a member of an organization.

What are the benefits of community service? Through community service you have the opportunity to help others, gain personal growth, gain hands on experience, learn about different career paths, and gain new friends.

Examples of community service: helping the environment, volunteering with senior citizens, tutoring others, assisting teachers, donate non-perishable food to a food bank, donating items to a homeless shelter, organizing events, and helping others.

8th grade students have received a community service log and folder. We have shared with the scholars what community service looks like and how it can be documented.
